The transformation of our Elizabeth Ballroom was the first major phase in our restoration of the Queens Hotel. Remaining open and functioning during the refurbishment has its challenges and the room had to be stripped back to its original features and redecorated within a tight three-week window. To record the journey of restoring this magnificent room we placed a camera in the room and over three weeks recorded nearly 400hrs of footage which we have condensed down into a two-minute video.
The main structural changes to the room included removing the raised staging and balcony area that was added in the late 50s and carved the room in two. By doing this the original Edwardian radiators hidden behind could be restored and given pride of place. Returning the room to the original level also meant two new sets of double doors could be reinstated giving step-free access to the terrace. All the windows were also replaced so that the incredible garden views could be enjoyed, they are now beautifully framed by the new silk curtains and lambrequins. The fireplaces at each end of the room have been opened up and although the original cast iron fires could not be salvaged the marble surrounds have been restored and delicate detailing placed to restore these two features at each end of the room. The star feature of the ballroom, however, is the gold leaf which adorns the ceiling and really sparkles when the restored Italian crystal chandeliers shine against it.
The Elizabeth Ballroom is perfect for not only weddings but all special occasions and is available for private hire for groups of 80 or more for only £1000.
